There are several alternatives to democracy as a system of governance that have been proposed and implemented in the world throughout history, such as communism, anarchism, authoritarianism, and you name it. Now, democracy remains the most popular system of government despite its shortcomings. That’s because democracy has been proven to be the most effective way to promote political stability, social equality, and economic prosperity in many countries. However, it is up to individual societies to judge which system of governance is best suited to their cultural, historical, and economical context.

There are several alternatives to democracy as a system of governance that have been proposed and implemented in the world throughout history, such as communism, anarchism, authoritarianism, and you name it. 
>> OR: Excluding democracy, there are other types of political systems, which have been prevalent both in the modern era and ancient times, such as communism, anarchism, and authoritarianism, among others. 

Now, democracy remains the most popular system of government despite its shortcomings.

That’s because democracy has been proven to be the most effective way to promote political stability, social equality, and economic prosperity in many countries.
