Based on the Confucianism ideology, the womens role was limited to be confined to be home as housewives and good mother. Many women got married in mid 20s and had babies before 30s. Since it is the mandatory for men to serve the military, the duties of women were to have a child and maintain harmony in the household by avoiding any unnecessary conflict. However, the rise of sologamy broke this social norm. According to the recent news articles, 1 in 3 South Koreans lives alone and more than half a woman. South Korean women are among the most highly educated in the world. Most women graduated from universities, and many engage in wide variety of field. This trend made many women to be more financially stable which led to opt out from marriage market because there is concern of career discontinuity after getting married and having babies. Accordingly the rise in sologamy in South Korea indicate the more active role of women in society.
