The longest time I have been awaken in the hospital was 2 days. We change the part we work every month. It is not officially allowed for an intern to work overnight shift without a break for 2 days. However, in the case of changing the part, there are some inevitable situation to work for 2 days continuously. To be honest, we do not fully work for overnight. We try to sleep in a spare moment, even though it is not a long time. If not, no one can keep concentrating on works continuously without a brief sleep. When I work two days continuously as a overnight shift, I felt that my work efficiency was low. Since I was too sleepy, I could not focus on my works, especially when I try to prescribe some medicine.

Work efficiency can be really a challenge when we lack sleep. Focus is hard to come by as well as mobility of our physical body is also not like the usual. Well, having some rest in between breaks are necessary to replenish your mental power in a 48-hour shift.
