There are no countermeasures to decrease the level of online abuse and hate speech in social media. First, there are technical issues. There is development in artificial intelligence and machine learning, but such advancement is not enough to tackle a large set of data promptly. Facebook alone has more than 3 billion users. To effectively fight against the various online abuses, it is important to quickly address the comments prior to their spreading. There was a case when a Brazilian soccer player posted revenge porn and took several hours for Facebook to take it down. Secondly, there is no standard for online abuse and hate speech. Discrimination and hatred are very subjective terms. It can be offensive to one person but not to others, so it is difficult to standardize. Therefore, many platforms hire locals to monitor the contents of their mother tongue. However, it can also lead to human capital costs.
